Fun Activities to Get Kids to Start Gardening

*Collaborative Post*

There’s a lot of options if you want to get your students outside and enjoy nature!

Here are just a few ideas, and we’ll leave the rest to you:

Gardening Activities for Students

Gardening has always been  a great way to teach children about science and nature. But did you know that there are many other benefits to getting students involved in gardening? Here are just a few:

Plant a Seed and Watch it Grow

One of the best ways to get your students interested in gardening is to plant a seed together and watch it grow.

This is a great activity for showing the life cycle of a plant and how plants need sunlight, water, and soil to grow.

If you want a challenge, try growing an avocado seed – you need to set them up with toothpicks and water to get the roots to start growing before you put them in the soil. This is fun because kids can see daily progress as the roots start to show.

But growing ordinary vegetables is a good class activity too – that way, you can get your hands into the soil from day one.

It’s a great way to teach kids about the life cycle of a plant and how important it is to take care of our environment. Plus, it’s just really satisfying to watch something you’ve planted grow!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Seeds (choose any vegetable or flower you like)
  • Potting soil
  • Plant pots or containers
  • Water

Instructions:

  1. Fill your plant pots with potting soil. You can do this ahead of time or let the students do it themselves.
  2. Help the students choose a few seeds to plant in their pot.
  3. Plant the seeds according to the instructions on the packet.
  4. Water the plants and put them in a sunny spot.
  5. Watch and wait! The students will be so excited to see their plants grow.
  6. Once the plants have grown, you can talk about how to take care of them and why it’s important to do so.

This is a great activity to do at the beginning of the school year, but it can really be done anytime!

It’s a great way to get students excited about science and nature. Plus, it’s just really satisfying to watch something you’ve planted grow!

Make a Garden in a Bottle

This is a great activity for younger students. All you need is a soda bottle, some soil, and some seeds. Help your students make a mini garden in their bottle and watch it grow!

This is a great activity to do with students of all ages. It’s simple, doesn’t require much preparation, and is very rewarding. Plus, it’s a great way to teach kids about the environment and the importance of recycling.Gardening Activities

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Empty plastic bottle (1 liter or 2 liter)
  • Scissors
  • Potting soil
  • Seeds (any kind will do)
  • Water

Instructions:

  1. Cut the bottom off of the plastic bottle.
  2. Fill the bottle with potting soil, leaving about an inch of space at the top.
  3. Add water to the bottle, enough to moisten the soil but not make it soggy.
  4. Plant your seeds in the soil.
  5. Place the bottle in a sunny spot and water as needed.

Your mini garden will need some ventilation, so make sure to open the top of the bottle every few days to let fresh air in.

After a few weeks, you should start to see your plants growing! When they’re big enough, you can transplant them into a regular pot or outside into your garden.

Create a Fairy Garden

This is a fun activity for all ages. Have your students use their imaginations to create a magical fairy garden. They can use real plants or craft supplies to make their garden come to life.

This activity is perfect for getting students outdoors and connecting with nature. It’s also a great opportunity for them to use their imaginations and be creative.

To create a fairy garden, you will need:

  • A spot in your yard or garden that gets plenty of sunlight
  • Some rocks or stones
  • A few small plants
  • Some small decorations like shells, beads, or treasures
  • A container to put it all in (a pot, bowl, or even an old shoe will work!)

Once you have all of your materials, help your students create a magical space for the fairies. They can arrange the stones and plants however they like, and add in any other special touches.

When they’re finished, it’s time to invite the fairies to come live in their new home!

This activity is not only fun, but it also helps students to connect with nature and use their imaginations. It’s a great way to encourage them to be creative and think outside the box.

Plus, it’s just plain fun! Who doesn’t want to create a fairy garden?!

Paint with Flowers

This is a great activity for getting your students outside and enjoying the beauty of nature. All you need is some flowers, paint, and paper.

Let your students get creative and see what kind of masterpieces they can create.

Painting with flowers is a great activity for students of all ages. It’s a simple way to bring the beauty of nature into your home or classroom, and it’s also a lot of fun!

Here are some tips for painting with flowers:

  1. Choose your flowers carefully. Make sure they’re fresh and in good condition. Avoid wilted or bruised flowers.
  2. Choose your colors carefully. You can mix and match different colors, or use a limited palette for a more cohesive look.
  3. Prepare your work surface. Cover it with newspapers or a drop cloth to protect it from paint spills.
  4. Start painting! Use a light touch at first and build up the color gradually.
  5. Don’t be afraid to experiment. Try different techniques, such as blending colors or making patterns with the flowers.
  6. Clean up your paint brushes and other supplies when you’re finished. Wash them in soap and water and let them air dry.

Painting with flowers is a great way to relax and have fun. It’s also a great way to add a splash of color to your home or classroom.

Go on a Nature Walk

This is a great way to get your students interested in the plants and animals around them.

Take a walk around your school grounds or local park and have your students identify the different plants and animals they see. You can even turn it into a scavenger hunt!

When taking students on a nature walk, it is important to be prepared. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. It is also important to have a plan for where you are going and what you want the students to see and learn.

Before heading out, give the students a brief introduction to what they will be doing. Explain that they will be using their senses to explore the natural world around them.

Let them know that there is no right or wrong way to do this and encourage them to be creative and have fun with it.

Once you are out on the nature walk, encourage the students to use all of their senses. Ask them what they see, smell, hear, feel, and taste. Encourage them to touch things and get a closer look at the world around them.

When you get back to the classroom, debrief with the students about their experience. Ask them what they enjoyed and learned on the walk.

This is a great opportunity to talk about the importance of conservation and taking care of our planet.
