Pumpkin Seed Activities

Pumpkin Seed Activities for Early Childhood Classrooms

When you carve pumpkins in the fall, don’t toss those seeds—save them for learning activities! Pumpkin seeds are a fantastic (and free!) material that can be used for fine motor work, math, literacy, sensory play, and art activities. Below are some easy and educational pumpkin seed activities you can try with your preschool or toddler class this fall.

⚠️ Safety Note – Pumpkin seeds can be a choking hazard for young children. Always supervise closely when using pumpkin seeds in classroom activities, and consider using larger, substitute materials (such as buttons, pom-poms, or paper cutouts) for toddlers or children who are still putting objects in their mouths.

Fine Motor & Sensory Activities

  • Seed Sorting – Provide trays to sort pumpkin seeds by size, color, or count.
  • Tweezers Pick-Up – Kids use tweezers to move seeds into small cups (pincer grasp practice).
  • Seed Scoop Station – Sensory bin with seeds, spoons, and scoops for pouring and transferring.

Literacy

  • Letter Seeds – Write letters on a paper pumpkin and have children cover each letter with a seed as you call them out.
  • Name Seeds – Children glue seeds to form the letters in their name.
  • Alphabet Tray – Bury foam letters in a bin of pumpkin seeds for a letter hunt.

Math

  • Counting Cups – Children count seeds into labeled muffin tin spots (1–10).
  • Seed Graphing – Graph the number of seeds each child scooped from a bin.
  • More or Less – Give two piles of seeds and ask which has more, less, or equal.
  • Pattern Making – Create AB, ABC, or more complex patterns with seeds and other fall items (corn kernels, acorns).
  • Roll & Count Game – Roll a die, then count and place that many seeds on a pumpkin mat.

Science

  • Sink or Float – Test pumpkin seeds in water vs. other fall objects.
  • Seed Observation – Examine seeds with magnifying glasses before and after roasting.
  • Planting Seeds – Try sprouting pumpkin seeds in soil or a clear cup with paper towels.
  • Roasting Experiment – Compare raw vs. roasted seeds (texture, smell, taste).
  • Drying Seeds – Observe how wet seeds change as they dry over several days.

Creative Arts

  • Pumpkin Seed Mosaic – Dye seeds with food coloring and use them for colorful mosaic art.
  • Fall Shakers – Place dried seeds in sealed bottles for homemade instruments.
  • Nature Collage – Combine seeds, leaves, and twigs for a mixed-media fall collage.
