Fun Corn on the Cob Activities for Preschoolers

Looking for fun summer activities for your preschool or toddler classroom? These corn on the cob activities are perfect for summer themes or National Corn on the Cob Day (June 11). From art and math to music and tasting, there are lots of easy ways to use real corn on the cob with young children.

Corn on the Cob Painting

Dip corn on the cob into washable paint and let children roll it across paper. The corn makes fun textures and patterns that kids love.

Try different paint colors for bright summer artwork!

Corn on the Cob Printing

Instead of rolling the corn, children can stamp the ends or sides of the corn onto paper to make different designs and prints.

Corn on the Cob Measuring

Bring several ears of corn in different sizes and let children compare them.

Children can:

  • Measure each ear with cubes or blocks, then count how many blocks each ear of corn is
  • Compare long and short
  • Put the corn in order from smallest to biggest

Corn on the Cob Taste Test

Cook corn on the cob and let children try it for snack time.

Talk about:

  • How it tastes
  • How it smells
  • What it sounds like when you bite it
  • Whether they like butter or plain corn better (You can even graph everyone’s favorite!)

Corn on the Cob Songs

Big and Yellow (Tune: Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star)

Corn on the cob, big and yellow,
(Stretch arms out wide)

Summer days are warm and mellow.
(Wipe forehead like sunshine is hot)

Peel the husks and take a bite,
(Pretend to peel corn and eat)

Crunchy, juicy, what delight!
(Rub tummy and smile)

Corn on the cob, big and yellow,
(Stretch arms out wide)

Summer days are warm and mellow.
(Wave arms slowly like corn blowing in wind)

Growing Corn (Tune: I’m a Little Teapot)

Here is the corn that grows so high,
(Crouch low, then slowly stand tall)

Reaching up toward the sunny sky.
(Stretch hands high overhead)

The rain comes down and the sun shines bright,
(Wiggle fingers downward for rain, then make a sun shape)

Now the corn is tall and ready to bite!
(Pretend to eat corn)

Peel the Corn (Tune: Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush)

This is the way we peel the corn,
(Pretend to peel husks)

Peel the corn, peel the corn.
(Repeat peeling motion)

This is the way we peel the corn,
(Pretend to pull husks downward)

On a summer morning.
(Stretch arms up like the sun)

This is the way we eat the corn,
(Pretend to hold corn)

Eat the corn, eat the corn.
(Pretend to take bites side to side)

This is the way we eat the corn,
(Rub tummy)

On a summer morning.
(Smile big)

Crunchy Corn (Tune: If You’re Happy and You Know It)

If you like your corn all crunchy, take a bite!
(Pretend to eat corn)

If you like your corn all crunchy, take a bite!
(Pretend to eat again)

It is juicy, sweet, and yummy,
(Rub tummy)

And it fills your little tummy,
(Pat belly)

If you like your corn all crunchy, take a bite!
(Big pretend bite)
